Try a different sport this Summer

If you are looking for something a little different than the standard sports that all kids play, The 540 Express Sports Fishing Club is right for you!  Kids have a ball fishing and parents can learn more about fishing too.  It is a much needed change of pace for all involved!

Questions about the program

Fishing Club will meet on Monday nights from 6 pm to 8 pm throughout the summer. The registration fee covers a minimum of 8 weeks of fishing at Private Wake and Harnett county ponds, a 540 Express Sports Fishing Club T-shirt, a cane pole and bait every week.  Members can also bring any of their own gear that they may have. If purchasing a pole it is recommended for younger fisherman to have the push button casting reels rather than the flip casting reels. The push button casting reels are easier for beginners to handle.
The Fishing Club will split youth into two divisions, to accommodate interests of younger participants with a shorter attention span or earlier bed times.
  -  Younger group would fish only from 6 – 7 PM and compete with one another.
  -  Older group would fish from 6 – 8 PM and compete with one another.
Four and Five year olds will be accepted as long as a parent is willing to help coach them. Otherwise kids must be 6 years old or older to participate.

Points will be awarded for each fish caught based on the type of fish it is. Each type of fish has an assigned point value.

SpeciesWorms, Crickets, Other Bait

We will keep track all season of individual and team points, number of fish caught and weight of the biggest fish for end of the season awards.
End of Season Celebration is a Pot Luck Fish Fry at the Optimist Club Farm on August 28th.   Awards will be presented for the largest catch of each species by division and most points for the season.

If you have never fished before there are several skills that will be taught.
   Casting
   Fishing with artificial lures
   Fishing with live bait
   Cleaning and cooking your catch.

Other special "clinic" style fishing activities are being considered too based on interest.  Join the club to learn about these activities!

We have hanging scales on sight and they make for a very cool pictures of you and your fish! You will have the option to keep fish you catch, but always check with the fishing commissioner in case there are special rules for the pond from the owner. Each pond has different rules on what they allow us to keep out of their pond.  You never have to keep fish, but it is a nice option to be able to take home what you caught that day for a fish fry!  Catch and release will count towards points.  As long as you get the fish to the rocks it will count as a catch.

The fishing dates for this season are:

July 24  - Rain make up day
